About the Chair
The Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Chair was established in 2022 under the auspices of the Department of Political Science, University of Calicut. The Chair is founded to promote research on the subjects related to Dr. Ambedkar’s Political, Legal, Social, and Economic vision and also on the various allied aspects such as gender, cultural, economic and political marginalities of the deprived sections of the Indian Society.
Aims and Objectives of the Chair
The vital role played by Ambedkar has left its everlasting imprint on the social tapestry of India after Independence and shaped the political and civic contours of India today. Hence the chair seeks to unfold the social and political relevance of Ambedkar to Contemporary India in Particular and Kerala in General through the following aims and objectives:
- To encourage research and discussion on marginality and socio-political exclusion in India
- To examine the contribution of Ambedkar to the universal notions of liberty, equality and justice
- To develop a critical perspectives to understand how the socio, cultural, economic and political landscape of people’s lives is shaped by caste structure
- To map out the cosmopolitan thinking of Ambedkar
- To study the legal and constitutional scholarship of Dr B R Ambedkar
- To institute Dr B R Ambedkar Endowments for encouraging meritorious students of deprived sections for higher studies and research
- To conduct legal awareness programmes to equip students to understand inequalities and tackle social inequalities
- To conduct Annual Ambedkar Memorial Lecture on 14 April.
- Publication of Working Papers related to Ambedkar Studies
- To commence 1 year diploma courses on “Human Rights and Contemporary Marginalities”
- To Conduct UGC NET/JRF and Civil Service training programmes for deprived section
- Annual Essay competitions on selected themes (Caste, Social Exclusion, Constitutionalism, Cosmopolitanism)
