Mahatma Ayyankali Chair

The Mahatma Ayyankali chair was established in 2022 under the auspices of the Department of History, University of Calicut.
Aims and Objectives of the Chair
- To encourage serious research and discussion on social dismemberment and social exclusion in Kerala.
- To institute endowments for encouraging meritorious students of deprived sections for higher studies and research.
- To impart training in skill development to equip them to compete in the modern world.
- To conduct annual lectures in memory of Ayyankali and his activities for the marginalized sections.
- To inquire into the exiting complex interplay between gender and castes and its impact on contemporary Kerala society.
Proposed Activities
Under the Chair, it is proposed to initiate Diploma Courses in Human Rights, Social Inclusion and Exclusion, Migration etc. It is also proposed to conduct special tenurial training for the deprived section appearing for competitive examination like Civil Service, UGC-NET-JRF etc. We are also proposing to institute an Endowment for Best PhD thesis submitted by the students of the deprived sections. Annual Essay, Quiz competitions can be conducted in the name of Ayyankali. Further, Annual Lecture Series, Exhibitions, Institutions Exchange Programs of students etc. with prominent institutions of India and abroad are also proposed.
It is also proposed to appoint an ‘Ayyankali Chair Visiting Professor’ under the Chair. He/She may be asked to engage in delivering special talks/lectures on different themes/subjects and different issues on the marginalized sections in the society.
